Special Ed Law

IDEA
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services to more than 6.5 million eligible infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities.

Infants and toddlers with disabilities (birth-2) and their families receive early intervention services under IDEA Part C. Children and youth (ages 3-21) receive special education and related services under IDEA Part B.  (idea.ed.gov)

Reflection: I feel that the above definition of the IDEA statute (cited from idea.ed.gov), is the most succinct definition and a simpler explanation than reading the actual statute.  The above link will take you to a federal website that explains IDEA, offers videos, presentations, and allows users to post questions that they may have.  IDEA regulates the ways in which states provide educational services to children with disabilities.  This will be important to me as a teacher because I will need to understand how the IDEA statute will effect my students and myself as a teacher. I will need to understand how to help a child with disabilities receive the services that they qualify for, how to implement those services, etc.

Parents as Partners
This link will take you to the Utah Parent Center website, and from there you can click on the Parent as Partners Handbook link.

Reflection: The Parents as Partners Handbook is an extremely valuable tool for parents who are in the process of helping children with an IEP (Individualized Education Program).  This handbook explains, in great detail, the process that parents and students will go through to develop and maintain an IEP, how parents can participate, the rights of parents and students, questions that parents may want to ask, and how parents can best prepare for each meeting.  I feel that this handbook will be extremely helpful to me as a teacher because I will be able to answer parent questions about the process and better understand how I will need to function as a member of the IEP team.  The handbook also provides an easy to understand explanation of the IDEA statutes.
